子供時代，わたしはマジンシアの市が所有する羊の世話をしていた．わたしの生まれ故郷であるその土地で，初めてわたしの周りにいる動物たちのことを考えるようになった．わたしの羊たちと一緒に草を食べている小さな動物たちの生活や習性を知ることに夢中になった．人間たちの持っている性格のうち，悪意以外のものは動物たちも持っていることにも気がついた．マジンシアの誇り高い貴族たちの陰謀や祭典が，野にいるスズメや野ネズミ，キツネたちの行動のミニチュアにすぎないことを面白がったりもした．動物たちから，人の誇りというものがいかに空しいものであるかを学ぶことができた．
そんなふうにわたしは少女時代を，ほとんどひとりで過ごした．そうしてわたしが若い娘になったころのある日，スカラ・ブレイのクラドック，モンスター退治の名人，また荒野の野蛮な種族と戦う戦士として有名な男性と出会った．はじめのうちわたしは彼の評判を恐れたが，やがて思慮のある慈悲深いひとで，空虚な栄光を求めて暴力を振るうことを嫌い，無実の人のためにのみ戦い自然の秩序を守るために狩りをしていることがわかってきた．彼がマジンシアでの仕事を終えたときに，彼の旅に一緒に，妻としてついて来ないかという申し出を，喜んで受けた．
それから何年もわたしたちは一緒に，彼が使命をはたすまでここに数ヶ月住み，かしこに1年住みとしながら様々な街へ旅した．それぞれの街で，わたしはできるだけ田舎へ出かけていき，地元の動物の様子や生態を観察した．多くは自分の手のように馴染んだものであり，また夫が対峙する魔法の生き物のように奇妙なものもいた．わたしはかれらの生き方を学び，自分の弱点を見せたりかれらをおどかしたり決してしなかったので，自分の安全を心配したことはない．このことについては，動物は必要ない暴力を振るわないという点で，人間よりも勝っている．
そして今，ついに夫とわたしは人生の暮秋を迎え，旅の日々を終えてここコーブで平和な日々をすごすことにした．わたしたちの頭を使い，子供たちを教育するために，ブリタニアの動物やモンスターについて記録することを決心した．わたしは野にすまう普通の動物について書き，クラドックはもっと特別な，彼が今までに追ったり対決した，人間がこの国をわかっている生き物について語る．
ワニ Alligator
この巨大なトカゲは長さでも重さでも人間よりずっと大きくなることがあり，標準的なものでも大型犬よりも大きい．その大きさのために，無知な人間から超自然のモンスター，あるいはドラゴンの落とし子とさえ言われることがある．迷信である．ワニは沼や池に住み，眠っているあいだはよく丸太と見間違えられる．ワニは人間を恐れるが，驚いたり興奮したりすると人間を襲うこともあり，そうなると強力なあごで人の腕を食いちぎるのは造作もない．ワニの肉を珍味と賞するものもいるが，わたしは食べたことがない．
鳥 Bird
猟師はやわらかい肉と，矢羽根として最高の羽毛のために森の大型の鳥を狙う．
熊 (黒熊) Bear (Black)
黒熊は熊の中でも一番普通に見られるものだが，人間に興味をまったく持たず，近づくと逃げ出すことがほとんどである．黒熊は低い岩だらけの丘(洞穴や穴蔵がある)とその周辺の森(獲物が豊富である)によく見られる．黒熊は平和主義の猟師で，魚，昆虫，ハチミツ(好物である)をエサにするが，刺激されると人間の何倍もの腕力で攻撃してくる．森に古くから住むある部族では，熊の肉を食べるとその筋力が得られると信じ，大いなる崇拝と儀式でもって熊を狩る．
熊 (灰色熊) Bear (Grizzly)
灰色熊はいとこの黒熊よりいくらか大きく，もっと気性が荒い．灰色熊を狩るときは大戦闘に耐えられる準備をしなければ，近づいたり追跡してはならない．そのほかの点については，もっと小さく黒い種類と同じ習慣と嗜好である．
熊 (シロクマ) Bear (Polar)
熊の中でももっとも危険なシロクマは北方の雪に閉ざされた土地にしかいない．植物が希少な厳しい環境のため，シロクマは大きな動物を獲物にする唯一の熊である．どの熊も危険を感じると人間を殺すことがあるが，シロクマは食べるためにも人間を攻撃する．
肉牛 Bull
ブリタニアの肉牛は大きさと美味さで有名である．乳牛と同種の動物だが，野生の牛は怒りっぽくなわばり意識の強い生き物で，その大きさと力の強さも手伝って，怒ったときには人間でも見境なく攻撃する．肉牛は腕のいい牧夫が扱うべき家畜で，それも最大限に尊重されるべきである．
猫 Cat
この小型の生き物は人間と一緒に住み，ネズミを獲る能力と人間になつく性質で，親しまれている．
ニワトリ Chicken
この愚かな鳥は卵と食肉のために農民が飼っている．ブリタニアの食生活や経済活動の大事な種類で，人間の世話なしでは生き延びられない．
乳牛 Cow
この国の主要なミルクと肉の源である．肉牛は穏やかで愚鈍な動物だが，野生の種類はすでに絶滅してしまった．
鹿 Deer
森に棲む鹿はやわらかな肉と丈夫な皮のために珍重されるが，未熟な狩人の手に落ちるほど愚かではない．性向は穏やかだが，危険を感じると猛烈に反抗し，少なからぬ猟師がその蹄や角にかけられて命を落としている．
犬 Dog
人間がいるところにはどこでも，この忠実な犬が見られるものだ．犬は家畜を飼ったり狩りをするときに重宝で，またほかの人間や動物，モンスターに対する番犬としても非常に重要である．
イルカ Dolphin
無知な者は大きな魚だと思っているが，イルカは実際は温血かつ子供をそのままの姿で産む，海に棲むひとつの独立した種である．イルカはサメを追い払ったり溺れた人間を助けてくれたりするので，船乗りはイルカを間違って殺してしまうことは非常な不運であると信じている(わざと殺すなどは考えられない)．イルカは一般に6頭から十数頭の家族で生活している．
鷹 Eagle
鷹は多くの詩人によって鳥の王者となされ，完全な風格と勇気の象徴とされている．実際には鷹は小動物を狩る，勇敢とも徳とも関係ない動物だが，その大きさと美しさはたしかに素晴らしいものである．いずれにせよ，鷹は傷つけられたり巣が危険にさらされたりすると恐るべき敵となる．
山羊 Goat
This useful animal is valued for its fleece, meat, milk and skin. Goats are resourceful creatures, capable of great mischief. They will eat most anything, allowing families that keep goats to usefully dispose of their household garbage.
ゴリラ Gorilla
The domain of the gorilla is so far from the halls of civilization, and these creatures (notwithstanding their size) are so adept at concealing themselves, that they are believed by many to be supernatural creatures, or purely mythical. To my certain knowledge, however, they are neither, but rather they are apes of great size, weighing sometimes as much as three large men. Gorillas live together in tribes, and migrate through the deep tropical forests seeking food. They are gentle creatures when unmolested, eating no meat greater than a grub or locust. If disturbed, however, they will attack with a strength many times that of a man.
馬 Horse
Horses are, of course, the primary means of quick travel about the land. It is believed that wild horses are extinct in Britannia, although rumors persist of a herd being spotted in this or that remote spot. Although rightly famed for their faithfulness and stamina, horses are also excitable creatures of no great intellect, and prone to panic at any danger, if not under the hand of a strong and experienced rider.
ラマ Llama
The llama is a strange but useful animal. It is about the size of a small pony, with wool like a goat and a long neck. They are used by mountain folk as beasts of burden, and as a source of wool, milk and at need meat. By and large they are gentle creatures, though they often have a decidedly independent streak.
山猫 Mountain Cat
Beautiful creatures a bit smaller than a man, these great cats hunt the mountainous regions of Britannia, sometimes venturing down into the wooded areas of the lowlands to hunt. Usually they stalk their prey in small groups of two to four. They avoid humans, but will attack if disturbed. They love to lie in the shade, and so seek out caves and the deep forests.
豚 Pig
Pigs are kept throughout the land for the sweet meat they provide. They are creatures of surprising intelligence, and able to eat nearly anything. Although reviled in proverb for their filthy habits, in truth the pig will remain as clean as its confines allow, although they do value cool water and honest mud greatly, to protect their sensitive skin from the ravages of the sun.
ウサギ Rabbit
The war between man and rabbit is ancient indeed. For rabbits are thieves, who love to devour the crops which man grows. Man, for his part, seeks the rabbit for his sweet meat and soft pelt, and to keep the crops safe from his deprivations. Yet rabbits are a fecund tribe, and they cannot be permanently exterminated. At best their population can be controlled to the extent necessary to ensure an adequate harvest.
ネズミ Rat
Wherever man goes, rat follows in his multitudes. These vermin greatly fear the light or the approach of a man, yet they are always lurking in the shadows, even in the cleanest of cities, ready to feast on anything that mankind might cast away or leave unguarded. The healers tell us that we should fear rats above all other monsters or sorcery, for they carry and spread a multitude of loathsome diseases.
羊 Sheep
Most of my early life was spent in the company of sheep. They are harmless, foolish creatures, devoid of mischief but full of folly, and do not survive long without the guardianship of a shepherd. They produce an excellent meat, but are more prized for their wool.
ヘビ Small Snake
The common Britannian serpent is not venomous, but does possess a sturdy bite with which to defend itself. These snakes are of little danger to humans, unless encountered in large colonies underground, where they can overwhelm an unwary traveller by sheer weight of numbers.
セイウチ Walrus
An ungainly but intelligent creature, the walrus is most common in the northern climes, but can sometimes be found virtually anywhere along the land's coast. Northern hunters customarily pursue the walrus for its meat, hide and tusks, using harpoons and small boats. A fully grown bull walrus often proves a match for even the most skilled harpoonist. In more temperate ports, groups of walruses often gather about harbors, scavenging the slops from the ships and docks.
狼 Wolf
The wolf, as is well known, almost always hunts in a pack. Wolves are a great danger to sheep and cattle, and consequently have been almost exterminated from cultivated areas. In general they fear humans, but in the deep wilderness wolves will sometimes waylay travelers, particularly when food is in short supply.
